Seasonal Advice
Surprise early warm-ups: if you have small outside ponds, particularly ones that are plastic covered and in the sun, keep track of the temperatures. Sometimes just a few sunny mild days can raise the water temperature to 70F (21C). Not only does this mean that you need to start feeding your fish, it also means they may spawn ... if that is something you want to catch, you might be surprised to find the "action" long over if you wait until April to uncover things. The other part of this is that your water plants will start growing; you may want to uncover the ponds to forestall this. Otherwise you could have lots of tender new growth that gets frost damaged in late freezes when you finally do uncover things. It is a bit of a balancing act.
